If this is your first spring in San Luis Obispo, make sure to get outside and make the most of it. Any one of these springtime activities offers fun and fresh air for all ages and walks of life.

1.)    Enjoying the Flora and Fauna

Stop and smell the flowers – literally. There are plenty of ways to take in a flowering SLO county. For a gorgeous dose of exercise try a hike through Carrizo Plains, Montana de Oro, or Pozo which are full of native wildflower fields. For less active days, a trip to the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden is both beautiful and educational.

2.)    Outings With Your Furry Friend

Your dog is part of the family, so why shouldn’t he or she enjoy the spoils of a new home, as well? Lucky for Fido, San Luis Obispo has a plethora of pet-friendly activities from beaches and dog parks, to dining and even a winery! So strap that leash on and get exploring with your favorite four-legged friend.

3.)    Foodie’s Delight

Who doesn’t love finding great eateries in a new town? It may just be one of the most fun explorations you do in your new town, but there’s a way to make it an even more fun activity. Put those delicious culinary finds outside, of course! Head down to any one of the SLO county farmer’s markets to pick up some of the best and most fresh produce, baked goods, and more that San Luis Obispo has to offer. If you’d like to add some vino to your local eats, don’t miss the upcoming Earth Day Food and Wine Weekend beginning April 11th!

4.)    For the Kiddies

Get your kids out and moving about. There are plenty of family friendly activities to delve into in SLO! The Pismo Beach Kite Expo the weekend of April 11th is sure to intrigue sporty kids and adults alike. If kite surfing doesn’t appeal, kids 12 and under can kick back, have some fun, and mingle with other local children at the Spring Fling held at Grover Heights Park.

Welcome to your new city! We count ourselves fortunate to live in a place that embraces the local culture and the thrill of Mother Nature so much, so get outside, explore, and breathe in San Luis Obispo in the spring.

Hello everyone and thanks for returning to our blog!

After all, San Luis Obispo was recently listed as one of the 10 Places to See in 2013, alongside South Korea, Amsterdam, and Ecuador, by the LA Times.

To celebrate this wonderful time of year, we are going to share some thrilling spring events in the area that we are greatly looking forward to. As anyone who has been knows, California’s Central Coast has a lot to offer in the way of sun, surf, fun, and festivities. Now, let’s take a look at what spring 2013 has in store for us.

Wine for Paws – April 13-14

Hosted by the Woods Humane Society, this event encourages wine aficionados and pet lovers alike to make their way to any of a list of dozens of Central Coast wineries – tasting fees or a portion of purchases made will be donated to the Woods Humane Society. Never a better time to say, “Cheers!”

Local farmers, chefs, and winemakers group together for “Farmfest on the Coast” – they showcase sustainability and deliver farm-to-fork pairings of locally grown, harvested, and handmade foodstuffs.

On Saturday, over 20 restaurants and more than 20 wineries will present the most delectable flavors of Pismo Beach. The weekend wraps up Sunday with a lip-smacking pancake breakfast and BBQ lunch courtesy of the Pismo Beach Cities Lions Club.

There are a lot of attractions that are drawing people to purchase real estate in the San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara areas, and this spring season is sure to draw more. With a long list of exciting events and attractions, there should be no reason for anyone to go bored as we sail into a beautiful season with great weather.

With that said, we are going to tell you our 5 most anticipated events for San Luis Obispo for this spring, in order of occurrence. If you know of an event that should have made the list, then we encourage you to tell us about it in a comment below the post. Quite honestly, the list was difficult to construct because there are just so many events happening this year!

1.      Cal Poly Wine Festival – March 31, 2012

Did you know San Luis Obispo County is California’s third largest wine-producing county in the state? It’s not news that California’s Central Coast has some of the best wine and vineyards in the country, and the Cal Poly Wine Festival is where you get to try the best of the best. Come pour, sniff, sip, and savor the delicious, premium wines at this wonderful festival.

2.      Taste of Pismo – April 20-22, 2012

This eventcombines the best of music, wine, food, and entertainment into one unforgettable weekend. Featuring wine from 20 wineries, food from 13 restaurants, beer from 3 breweries, and live music and entertainment, Taste of Pismo is a weekend long annual event fit for family, friends, and lovers.

3.      Chili Cookoff  & Car Show – April 21, 2012

Wine Coast Country’s website states, “The Cambria Chamber of Commerce presents a Chili Cookoff and Car Show…” We think they were having fun with alliteration when they came up with that, but we also think you will have fun attending it.

4.      Flavor of SLO (A benefit for United Way) – May 6, 2012

This much anticipated annual event in San Luis Obispo takes place at the beautiful and historic Jack House and Gardens downtown. The event is so appealing because attendees can sample food and wine all while helping a good cause.

5.      Free Summer Concerts – All Summer Long!

We chose these events partly because they start in spring and go all summer long. With Concerts in the Park, Concerts in the Plaza, Saturday in the Park, and Sizzlin’ Summer Concert Series, you can get free live music just anywhere you live on the Central Coast. Check out our county’s website for more information.

Start Now to Enjoy Spring Later

It’s about one month away, but it’s time to start getting prepared. Spring is a wonderful season. Spring is associated with blossoming flowers, sunshine, gentle breezes, and the chirping of birds. Why not embrace the new season and something for your home.

Whether you are just moving in, or have watched the years go by as the house settled, there are lots of things you can do to spruce up your home for spring. It’s time for your home to reflect the blossoming flowers outside. We will separate what you can do into two categories: home maintenance and home upgrades.

Home Maintenance

  • Check for loose or leaky gutters. Time to get out the ladder, clear debris, then make sure that the downspouts pour away from the foundation.
  • Using a screwdriver, probe the wood trim around windows, doors, railings and decks. Make repairs before the spring rains do more damage to the wood.
  • Have a trained heating and cooling contractor clean and service the outside unit of the air conditioning system. Also make sure to change interior filters regularly.
  • Since spring is the season of vegetation, rebirth, and growth, pay lots of attention to soil. Use a hoe to churn and loosen the soil, then mix in compost for nutrients. Low areas in the yard or next to the foundation should be filled with compacted soil. Spring rains can cause yard flooding, which can lead to foundation flooding and damage. Also, when water pools in these low areas in summer, it creates a breeding ground for insects.
  • Do you know how old your air conditioning unit is? Before the sweltering summer  heat comes, consider investing in an energy efficient Energy Star-rated unit. Consult an expert to ensure the size of the unit is properly matched to the needs of your home.

Home Upgrades

  • Consider some bigger home improvements like window replacements. Spring is the perfect time to do this because the weather is nice. Also, consider adding spray foam insulation to your attic or in other areas of your home where the summer heat can infiltrate. It is possible that you can start saving up to 50 percent in energy costs all year long. Another way to encourage that process? Add window coverings to block sunlight during the day, so your air conditioner does not have to work as hard.
  • Replace inefficient incandescent lighting with more efficient compact fluorescent or LED lighting that also produce less heat and save energy.
  • Get your outside social area ready! Chances are you may plan on having friends and family over this spring and summer to enjoy the weather, holidays, and simply celebrate life. Consider consulting with landscape designers and builders so patio, deck, and swimming pool construction will be finished early enough to enjoy it all while you still can this year.

The home improvement, maintenance, and upgrade tips we have just offered you are some of the best you can utilize to really enjoy your home in 2012. Do you have another tip or idea you would have added to the list? If so, we encourage you to share!
